The Montreal International Documentary Festival (RIDM) will present the Canadian premiere of ODA Kaori’s Underground.

From this lyrical composition of images and sounds, where different layers of history coexist and overlap, emerges a transhistorical exploration of the Battle of Okinawa, a pivotal event in Japanese history. Through levels of visual, sonic, and narrative experimentation, the energetic charge of the gama, caves used as shelters by the island’s population during the 1945 American occupation, permeates every shot. This naturalistic meditation is coupled with the precious testimony of a survivor to find meaning in the details: the rustling leaves, the bones found, the echoes of the cave, and the body occupying the space. Between deliverance and homage, Underground invites us to listen gently, transporting the senses toward new spaces and toward healing this generational wound.
