Welcome to the Yōkai Parade: Yōkai Monsters Trilogy Film Series

Welcome to the Yōkai Parade!

In conjunction with our gallery’s Yōkai Netsuke Exhibition, we are proud to present the Yōkai Monsters trilogy of films from the late 1960s.

These films were produced by Daiei Film, one of the major studios during the postwar Golden Age of Japanese Cinema. They produced masterpieces such as KUROSAWA Akira’s Rashōmon (羅生門), MIZOGUCHI Kenji’s Ugetsu Monogatari (雨月物語), and launched several classic “tokusatsu” film series including Gamera, Daimajin, and Yōkai Monsters. Daiei Film was eventually acquired by Kadokawa Pictures.

Decades later, the prolific MIIKE Takashi helmed The Great Yōkai War in 2005, a loose remake of Spook Warfare (the second film from the original trilogy), rejuvenating the franchise for a new generation. It was then followed by a sequel, The Great Yōkai War: Guardians, released in 2021.
