Thank you very much for your continued support of The Japan Foundation, Toronto.
We are writing today to share an important announcement regarding the upcoming transition of our centre.
Since its establishment in 1972, The Japan Foundation has been dedicated to promoting international cultural exchange and fostering a deeper understanding of Japan around the world through its headquarters and institutions in Japan, and overseas offices in the field of culture, language, and dialogue. The Japan Foundation, Toronto was established as a Canadian liaison of the Foundation in 1990 and expanded into the Cultural Centre in 1995 as we operate today. Since then, it has provided countless opportunities for people to experience Japanese culture and knowledge, while serving as a welcoming place for exchange and community.
As part of a broader review of the structure and functions of The Japan Foundation’s global offices, The Japan Foundation, Toronto will conclude the operations of its public lending library, gallery, and event spaces in conjunction with its office relocation in December 2026.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who have supported and utilized the centre over the decades and who have helped foster a warm and vibrant community filled with countless memories.
The 1990s, when The Japan Foundation, Toronto was established, were often described as the “Era of Culture”. In the years following the end of the Cold War, the importance of cultural exchange gained increasing recognition worldwide, leading The Japan Foundation as well to establish new overseas offices. Since then, however, the environment surrounding Japanese culture and cultural exchange has changed significantly, driven by the rapid spread of the Internet, the growing mobility of people, and the increasing awareness and global expansion of Japanese popular culture. Furthermore, the development of online tools following the COVID-19 pandemic as well as the increasingly uncertain international environment have brought new challenges and opportunities to international cultural exchanges.
Yet it is precisely in such times that the value and importance of cultural exchange become ever more evident. We will focus even more on the essential mission of The Japan Foundation and continue to advance cultural and educational programs that promote mutual understanding and trust between Japan and Canada.
While the operations of our facilities will change considerably, we will continue to carry out programs and initiatives throughout Canada including collaboration, grants, and online programming as well as host occasional events at the new location’s meeting spaces. We will also continue to utilize digital platforms such as our Digital Library, JFF Theater, and online Japanese-language courses, while building upon the networks and expertise we have cultivated over the years. In addition, a portion of the library’s existing collection will be retained as a reference resource and will be made available upon request.
Our current office will move to a new location by the end of 2026. Details regarding our new address and related information will be announced separately in early December. Prior to the move, from the summer through the fall of 2026, we plan to host a series of events at our current centre to express our appreciation to all those who have supported us, reflect on our history together, and share our vision for the future as we embark on this new chapter.

平素より国際交流基金トロント日本文化センターをご支援いただき、誠にありがとうございます。
本日は、当センターの今後に関する重要なお知らせを申し上げます。
国際交流基金は、1972年の設立以来、日本国内の本部・機関、そして海外拠点を通じて、文化・言語・対話の分野において、世界における日本理解の促進と国際文化交流の推進に取り組んでまいりました。トロント日本文化センターは、カナダにおける拠点として1990年にトロントに開設され、1995年に現在の日本文化センターへと拡充されて以来、多くの皆様に日本文化や知識に触れていただく場、そして交流の場を提供してまいりました。
このたび、国際交流基金全体の事業の実施体制の見直しにより、当センターは2026年12月に予定しているオフィス移転を機に、一般開架式図書館、ギャラリー、イベントスペースの運営を終了する予定です。
長年にわたり当センターをご利用いただき、数多くの思い出とともに温かなコミュニティを育んでくださった皆様に、心より御礼申し上げます。
当センターが開設された1990年代は、「文化の時代」とも呼ばれ、冷戦終結後の世界各地で文化交流の重要性が高まり、国際交流基金においても海外拠点の設置が進みました。その後、インターネットの急速な普及や人の往来の活発化、さらにはクールジャパンの広がりなどを背景として、世界における日本文化を取り巻く環境は大きく変化してきました。加えて、コロナ禍を経てオンラインツールが一層普及するとともに、昨今の不安定な国際情勢の中で、国際文化交流を取り巻く状況も新たな局面を迎えています。
同時に、このような時代であるからこそ、国際文化交流の意義はますます高まっています。移転後、当センターのスペースはコンパクトになりますが、当基金が果たすべき本質的な役割に一層注力し、日本とカナダの相互理解と信頼醸成に資する文化交流・教育事業をさらに推進してまいります。
施設の運営方法は大きく変わりますが、共催、助成、オンラインなどの多様な手法、デジタルライブラリーやJFFシアター、オンライン日本語講座をはじめとする各種プラットフォーム、そしてこれまで培ってきたネットワークとノウハウを活かしながら、加えて新施設におけるミーティングスペースも活用し、引き続きカナダ全国に向けた日加交流事業を実施してまいります。また、現在の図書館所蔵書籍等の一部については、閉架式書庫にて保管し、閲覧利用いただけるよう運用してまいります。
なお、現在のオフィスは2026年末に別のロケーションへ移転する予定です。新住所などの詳細につきましては、12月上旬を目途に改めてご案内申し上げます。また、移転に先立ち、2026年夏から秋にかけて、当センターを支えてくださった皆様への感謝の意を表するとともに、これまでの歩みを振り返り、新たな出発に向けた展望を共有する各種イベントを当センター施設にて開催する予定です。
