Office Relocation & Changes to Public Services and Spaces
Show What are the changes after this relocation?
The current public facilities, including the public lending library, gallery, and event spaces, will be closed. Our office will be relocated to a new location with limited public access – conference room and reference room. The physical library materials will be accessible by appointment for onsite reference only. More details can be found below.
The role we play and the programs we offer will remain the same, except the operation of the current library. While our public lending library will be closed, a portion of the library’s existing collection will be retained as a reference resource and will be made available upon request. We will continue to offer the JF Canada Digital Library, interlibrary loan, film screenings, lectures, exhibitions, exhibitions loan, Japanese language courses/events and teachers’ workshops, as well as grant programs. Events will be held online or at external venues in principle, and some occasional events may take place at the meeting spaces in the new location.
Show Where is the new location?
We will announce more details about our new location in December 2026.
Show When is the last day for the library and gallery?
The final day is scheduled to be on October 9, 2026, as of July 13. Subject to further updates.
Show Can I still apply for volunteer opportunities?
We greatly appreciate your continued support and interest.
JFT will continue accepting online Japanese conversation volunteers in JFT’s Online Virtual Study Space. JFT will also seek support from our Event & Gallery volunteers when organizing some events held at external venues.
Show Will the Marugoto Japanese Language Courses continue as they are?
Yes, nothing will change with regards to online programs including the Marugoto Japanese Language Courses. Japanese Language in-person events will either be held at external venues or may take place at the meeting spaces in new location.
Library Physical Materials & Borrowing
Show Can I still borrow physical materials until the last day of operation?
You can still borrow physical materials until August 22, 2026, but you will need to return physical library items by the last day of operation on October 9, 2026.
Show I have items currently on loan. When do I need to return them?
Please return the borrowed physical library item(s) by the due date specified at the time of checkout. If the item(s) cannot be returned by the due date, please ensure that they are returned no later than the last day of operation on October 9, 2026.
Show What will happen to my library card?
You can continue to use your valid library card to access the JF Canada/USA Digital Library after our physical library space closes. If you would like to create a new library account or renew your library card to access the digital library, please submit your application form.
Show Will the physical library materials be available somewhere after the relocation?
A portion of the library’s existing collection will be retained as a reference-only (not public lending) resource at our new location and will be made available upon request. You will be able to search the materials from our online catalogue after the relocation. Rest of the existing library materials will be donated to other libraries in principle. More information along with the new operations at new location will become available at a later date.
Show Are there other libraries where I can find Japanese books in Toronto?
You can find Japanese materials at Toronto Public Library. Try searching using TPL’s “Advanced Search” option and selecting “Japanese” under the language filter. Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre also has a library collection of Japanese materials..
Gallery・Event Spaces
Show Will talk events, exhibitions or film screenings no longer take place after the relocation?
While our onsite public space will no longer be available, all the cultural programs will remain the same. We will continue to host cultural programs including talk events, exhibitions and film screenings at the external venues or through various means including co-presentation, grant support, or exhibitions for loan, and may hold occasional events at the meeting spaces in the new location.
