Ikiru • いきる
Directed by Akira Kurosawa/B&W /1952/143 min/blu-ray

Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura), a devoted single father, has mindlessly rubber-stamped documents at city hall for 30 years to support his son.  When he receives a diagnosis of terminal stomach cancer, he throws himself into a seemingly lost cause- turning a vacant lot into a playground for a neighbourhood mothers’ group, a project that has repeatedly been pushed aside by the city bureaucracy. Considered by many to be Kurosawa’s greatest film, Ikiru is an inventively structured, brilliantly performed, relentless examination of what it means to truly be alive.

  • Best Picture, Kinema Jumpo
  • Best Film, Best Screen Play, Best Sound Recording, Mainichi Film Concours
  • Special Prize of the Senate, Berlin International Film Festival
