Hirokazu Kore-eda Retrospective

The Japan Foundation, Toronto is proud to present with the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre a selection of films by master filmmaker KORE-EDA Hirokazu. Kore-eda is widely considered Japan’s finest contemporary director and screenwriter. Internationally celebrated, he won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for Like Father, Like Son and the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for Shoplifters.
Over the month of June the Virtual JCCC film series will feature four of his films, all dealing with themes of family and its meaning. Film details here >

Four siblings live happily with their mother in a small apartment in Tokyo. The children all have different fathers. They have never been to school. The very existence of three of them has been hidden from the landlord. One day, the mother leaves behind a little money and a note, asking her 12-year old son Akira to look after the others. And so begins the children’s odyssey, a journey nobody knows.
