A talk series by JFT Program Officer Toshi Aoyagi, held in conjunction with Legendary Loyalty: The 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints
See the characters in the prints played on stage by Kabuki actors!
The 47 Ronin story is one of the few plays you can see both in Ukiyoe prints from historical productions and on the contemporary stage. In order to provide context for the exhibited prints, we will give a presentation of scenes from current Kabuki theatre. This time, Act 3, in the Grand Corridor of Pine and Act 4, Lord Hangan’s seppuku.
The scenes described in Ukiyoe prints are traced through video images from contemporary Kabuki theatre and Bunraku puppet theatre. This time, the scenes of a romantic couple, Okaru and Kampei: Act 5, Yamazaki Road and Act 6, Kampei’s seppuku.
Okaru works as a courtesan in Kyoto, not knowing of the tragic death of her husband Kampei. Ōishi Kuranosuke, Chief retainer of the Enya clan, spends night after night at parties, hiding his secret mission of vendetta. Conspiracy and suspicion intersect in the radiant red light district. Act 7, Tea House I in Kyoto.
