DVD screenings in conjunction with Legendary Loyalty: The 47 Ronin in Japanese Prints

Part I:  Monday, December 5, 6:30 pm
Part II: Thursday, December 8, 6:30 pm

Following the surpassing popularity and tradition of the classic Kabuki play The Treasury of Loyal Retainers, (Kanadehon Chūshingura), a modern Japanese playwright, Seika Mayama (1878-1948), wrote a series of eleven plays titled Genroku Chūshingura between 1934 and 1941 on the same theme. Based on these plays, master film director Kenji Mizoguchi created an epic piece by the same title in two parts: Part I (1941) and Part II (1942). In spite of the pressure and limits of wartime circumstances, Mizoguchi’s noble images reveal the grandeur of the Genroku period and the philosophical depth of Seika’s literary world.
