GOLDEN TIME

A family friendly anime that is set during Japan’s 1980s economic boom years. One day, a 1960s television used for many years is thrown away at a junkyard, but refuses to accept his fate. The film beautifully creates a pure visual experience through the harmony of classic animation, sound effects and music. Golden Time was winner of the 2013 Japan Media Arts Excellence Award in the Animation Division.

Reclusive Jiro is a 32-year-old man who is out of work and lives at home with his parents. After tragedy hits the family, his mother runs away and leaves behind a six month old dog named Ichiro. Together with the cute bean sized Shiba-Inu, Jiro must venture outside to find his mother. This is the first of three sequels including one in 3D and a TV series.

This documentary captures the time-consuming, multi-stage transformation of a fish called Bonito, into Katsuo-Bushi, one of the most essential ingredients in traditional Japanese cuisine. From trimming, drying and smoking process, we get a look at the traditional craft while it adapts to the changing trade and environment.
