Yone and Shige live alone in a modest house in a bamboo forest; their son/husband has gone off to battle. After the two women are raped and murdered by marauding samurai, they are reborn through black cat magic and permitted to live on earth so long as they carry out a mandate to murder all samurai who pass through. Revenge is satisfying until their son/husband makes an unexpected return, now a newly minted samurai whom they are obliged to kill to fulfil their pact with the demons of hell…
