YAMADA Naoko is the foremost working auteur in anime right now. Her films synthesize the unique sensitivities of the teenage experience, unspoken bonds between friends expertly rendered through quiet gestures, providing a subversive and much needed feminine voice to the categorization. Liz and the Blue Bird (2018) is her finest work; ostensibly a spinoff of a popular anime series, the film functions absolutely as a standalone title.
