In conjunction with the 2021 Toronto International Festival of Authors guest Eto Mori, who is the author of the book of the same name.

Upon arriving at the train station of death, an impure soul is granted a second chance at life against his will. Reincarnating into the body of Makoto Kobayashi, a 14-year-old boy who recently committed suicide, the soul is tasked to identify the boy’s greatest sin in life within a time limit of six months. Although it remains reluctant toward continuing life as Makoto, the soul soon begins to notice the complexities of people’s emotions and actions.

A beautifully animated feature film directed by the realist visionary HARA Keiichi, Colorful is based on a beloved and bestselling Japanese novel of the same name. Born in 1959, HARA Keiichi started his career with Tokyo-based studio Shin-Ei Animation, where he worked on two of Japan’s longest-running animation series: Doraemon and Crayon Shin-chan. Although he kept a fairly low profile early on in his career, HARA steadily built international recognition with his award-winning and critically acclaimed films such as Summer Days with CooMiss Hokusai, and Birthday Wonderland.

Acclaimed Canadian author Kerri Sakamoto interviews Eto Mori on her book Colorful and its adaptation into an animated film directed by Keiichi Hara. Sakamoto asks how Mori views authors’ ownership to their works, opportunities and challenges of literary works and visual works, and characters depicted in her original book and the film. Interpretation provided by Jocelyne Allen.

About Eto Mori

Eto Mori has been a literary star in Japan for over thirty years. She has won numerous major awards in Japan, including the Naoki Prize, one of Japan’s most prestigious awards for popular fiction. Colorful has been translated into seven languages and adapted into three films. Colorful is her first novel to be translated into English. She lives in Tokyo, Japan.

About Kerri Sakamoto

Kerri Sakamoto is the Toronto-born author of three novels that explore the Japanese Canadian experience. Her first book, The Electrical Field, received the international Commonwealth Book Prize and was nominated for the Governor General’s Literary Award. Kerri is a two-time recipient of the Canada-Japan Literary Award for her first book and her 2018 novel, Floating City. In 2020, she earned the Writers’ Trust Engel Findley
