Director Makoto Shinkai (25 min.) 2002

Japanese with English subtitles

Join us for the inaugural Bring Your Own Bento, Free Lunchtime Film Screenings! The first short film in the series will be the science fiction drama by anime master storyteller Makoto Shinkai.

The story follows the lives of two close childhood friends, a boy and a girl, who get separated once the girl is recruited by the UN Space Army and sent in to space to fight in a war against aliens. As the 15 years old girl goes deeper and deeper into space, the texts she sends take more and more to reach the earth; the film simultaneously follows her battles and the boy’s life as he receives her texts over the years.

The short anime was adapted into an audio CD, a short story and manga.

Shinkai is most notable for directing the critically acclaimed anime Your Name or Kimi no na wa. It was a huge commercial success becoming the fourth highest grossing film of all time in Japan, and the highest grossing anime film worldwide.

Don’t forget to bring your lunch (bento)!
