Hirokazu Kore-eda Retrospective

The Japan Foundation, Toronto is proud to present with the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre a selection of films by master filmmaker KORE-EDA Hirokazu. Kore-eda is widely considered Japan’s finest contemporary director and screenwriter. Internationally celebrated, he won the Jury Prize at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival for Like Father, Like Son and the Palme d’Or at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival for Shoplifters.
Over the month of June the Virtual JCCC film series will feature four of his films, all dealing with themes of family and its meaning. Film details here >

Three sisters – Sachi, Yoshino and Chika – live together in a large house in the city of Kamakura. When their father – absent from the family home for the last 15 years – dies, they travel to the countryside for his funeral, and meet their shy teenage half-sister. Bonding quickly with the orphaned Suzu, they invite her to live with them. Suzu eagerly agrees, and a new life of joyful discovery begins for the four siblings…
The film is based on the manga series Umimachi Diary (海街diary) by YOSHIDA Akimi. It was selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival.
Starring Haruka Ayase, Masami Nagasawa, Kaho, Kirin Kiki, Suzu Hirose.
