For the upcoming JFT Book Club (Hybrid), we will discuss ISAKA Kotaro’s : Seesaw Monster* (The original Japanese version: 伊坂幸太郎著『シーソーモンスター』, translated into English by Sam Malissa) . The author ISAKA Kotaro is one of Japan’s most popular mystery/thriller authors, known for his dark wit and intricate storytelling, and a featured guest at this year’s Toronto International Festival of Authors (TIFA).

*We will cover both novellas in the book, Seesaw Monster and Spin Monster.

Blending humor, suspense, and social insight, this inventive short story collection connects two seemingly different worlds: a humorous yet sharp “mother-in-law vs. daughter-in-law” domestic battle set in 1980s Japan, and a thrilling near-future tale of AI and power struggles. Together, they explore timeless questions about conflict, understanding, and coexistence.

Whether you’re in the GTA or joining virtually from other parts of the world, connect with fellow book lovers to explore new perspectives and share insights into the story that you might not have discovered on your own!

We also have a limited number of “Observer” slots available for those wanting to listen this time, or for anyone curious about how a book club works without the pressure to speak — first-time participants are welcome!

P.S. A special video message from the author ISAKA Kotaro will be exclusively shared with book club participants!

ABOUT THE BOOK

Seesaw Monster

(The original Japanese version:『シーソーモンスター』)

Written by ISAKA Kotaro

Translated by Sam Malissa

Published by Chuokoron-Shinsha, 2019 / The Overlook Press, 2025

From the international bestselling author of Bullet Train, two inventive espionage tales in one

Miyako suspects her mother-in-law is a murderer. It’s not just a case of them rubbing each other the wrong way—there is definitely something suspicious going on. But Miyako isn’t exactly what she seems either. Her husband has no idea about her past life as a secret agent. When she decides to use her professional skills to investigate her mother-in-law, the delicate equilibrium of their lives is thrown wildly out of balance. Many decades after the events of Seesaw Monster, in a future world dominated by surveillance, facial-recognition software, and AI, the most sensitive information lives only on paper, and confidential messages must be delivered by trusted couriers like Mito. But one delivery pulls Mito into a conspiracy beyond his wildest imagination and forces him into a race against time to defeat a world-changing technological threat. Mixing mythology, family drama, corruption, and espionage, these gripping novellas from the international bestselling author of Bullet Train explore the idea of progress, the power of close relationships, and the nature of conflict with deadly stakes.
